2021 K - 2 Instructional League

Fundamentals First is excited to offer its Instructional League for children in grades K-2!

FFA is excited to provide a safe and nurturing environment for boys and girls in grades 3 and 4 to experience competing in the game of basketball. The goal of the Instructional league is to give the children a positive basketball experience and help the children learn fundamentals, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The league will consist of 8 games, one each Sunday, beginning on September 12, 2021, and running consecutively over eight weeks.

1

Games

The games will begin with 15 minutes of "practice/training." If a team needs assistance during this time, FFA staff will be happy to assist.

Beyond basic individual skills, drills should focus on fundamental offensive and defensive concepts that emphasize player movement and involvement.

The game will consist of four quarters, each with 7 minutes of running time. We will use the CYO substitution rules; each player must play at least a quarter in the first and second half. We will not keep score during the games. We want the focus to be on the skills learned and the fun.

During the first two weeks, violations other than fouls will be called and corrected, but no turnover will occur. We want to make sure children have a chance to learn. In week three, we will enforce the violations, and a turnover will transpire.

Teams

Each team must have a minimum of 8 players. A maximum of 10 players is highly encouraged for sufficient playing time for each child but is not limited to this number.

Teams do not have to have a coach for on-court instruction during the first 15 minutes. Our staff will be happy to work with the children. A bench coach is required for all teams to manage the children that are not in the game.

3

Staff

FFA staff will be the referees and serve as coaches on the court for each team to help the children understand how to play correctly. There will be a lot of confusion and errors, and we will correct and make the children aware of this initially but not penalize them with a turnover. As the weeks go on, we will enforce the rules accurately
